Chapter 16 - The Baby

Daniel sat in the county jail, staring at a photo of a baby.

The guard had brought it in. Elena sent it. No note.

He didn’t deserve it.

The baby was small, with dark hair and Elena’s nose. His son. Maybe.

Miriam had told him the baby wasn’t his. She’d shown him text messages from a number he didn’t know. She’d said Elena was cheating.

He’d believed her.

Now he wasn’t sure.

He picked up the photo and turned it over.

On the back, in Elena’s handwriting: “His name is Mateo.”

Daniel started to cry.

He called his lawyer. “I want to talk. Everything.”

The lawyer came.

Daniel talked for four hours.

He told them about the pool. About the stick. About the button.

Then he told them about his father’s accident.

“She didn’t slip. My mother pushed him.”
