Chapter 4 - What the Maid Knew

Rosa didn’t panic.

She’d been in worse places. A border crossing in the back of a truck. A kitchen fire in 2003. A marriage that ended with a broken jaw.

She pulled Elena close and pointed down.

Elena shook her head. She was losing strength. Her lips were turning blue.

Rosa pointed again.

Under the pool light, there was a small access panel. Not big enough for a person, but big enough for a hand.

Rosa dove.

Daniel grabbed her from behind.

She felt his arm around her throat, not tight, just panicked. He was trying to climb her to the surface.

Rosa elbowed him in the ribs. He let go. She reached the panel, pried it open with her fingernails, and found the pool light cord.

She yanked it.

The light went out.

But behind the panel, there was a small air pocket. Maybe a cup of air. Maybe less.

She surfaced back to Elena and dragged her down.

“Breathe.”

Elena put her mouth to the opening. She sucked in stale air.

Daniel grabbed Elena’s arm and tried to push her aside. His face was white, his eyes wild.

Rosa grabbed his hair and held him back.

Then she pointed at the pool light housing. The camera lens was still there. Red light blinking.

She mouthed the words: “He’s recording.”

Elena’s eyes went wide.
