Chapter 15 - The Pool Light

The footage was grainy, green, and silent.

The detective played it for Elena in the hospital room.

She watched herself sink. She watched Rosa jump in. She watched Daniel take the stick.

Then she watched him hesitate.

On the screen, Daniel’s face was close to the camera. His eyes were wide, scared. He looked at his mother through the glass.

Then he turned back to Elena and pushed her down.

But before he did, his lips moved.

The detective paused it.

“Can you read lips?”

Elena stared at the screen.

“I think he said ‘I’m sorry.’”

The detective nodded.

“That’s what our expert said.”

He pressed play again.

Then the screen showed Miriam’s finger pressing the button.

The camera time-stamped it. 3:22 p.m.
