Chapter 6 - The First Kick

Elena felt the baby kick.
It was small, sharp, a tiny foot pressing against her ribs from the inside.
She opened her eyes.
Rosa was still holding her. Daniel had the stick. He was wedging it into the corner of the cover.
Rosa pushed Elena toward the surface. “Push with him.”
Elena didn’t want to. Her body didn’t want to. But she put her hands on the glass and pushed.
The cover shifted. A hairline crack ran from the corner to the middle.
Daniel pushed harder. The stick snapped.
He fell back, and his head hit the pool wall. A cloud of blood bloomed from his scalp.
Rosa grabbed the broken end of the stick and jammed it into the crack.
“Again,” she shouted underwater. The sound came out as a gurgle.
Elena pushed.
The crack widened.
Then the baby kicked again.
May you like
Elena screamed into the water.
