Chapter 13 - Rosa’s Secret
Elena woke up to the sound of a baby crying.
She was in a hospital room. Rosa was asleep in a chair, an oxygen tube under her nose.
The nurse brought the baby in. A boy. Tiny, red, but alive.
Elena cried.
Rosa opened her eyes. She tried to sit up, but she couldn’t.
“You did it, mija.”
Elena shook her head. “You did it.”
Rosa smiled, but it was tired.
“I need to tell you something.”
Elena looked at her.
“I’m not just a maid.”
Elena waited.
“Your mother hired me. Before she died. She knew Miriam was dangerous. She asked me to stay close to you.”
Elena’s mouth opened.
“I couldn’t protect your mother. But I could protect you.”
The machines beeped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Would you have believed me?”
Elena didn’t answer.
Rosa closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry I didn’t do more.”

Then the monitor above Rosa’s bed started beeping fast.
