Chapter 14 - The Neighbor

Walter sat in the witness box, his hearing aid squealing every time he turned his head.

The defense lawyer was young, sharp, and clearly annoyed.

“Mr. Kowalski, you’ve said you saw Mrs. Vance press a button. Which button?”

“The red one.”

“Was it red?”

“I think so. Maybe white.”

“Maybe?”

Walter shrugged. “My eyes ain’t great.”

The lawyer pounced. “So you’re not sure what you saw.”

“I’m sure I saw a lady in a pool underwater. I’m sure I saw blood.”

“But you can’t be sure about the button.”

Walter looked at the jury. Then at Miriam.

“I’m sure about that woman’s face. She didn’t look scared. She looked annoyed.”

The lawyer rolled his eyes.

“Mr. Kowalski, you have a hearing aid. You didn’t hear any screams?”

“I don’t need ears to see a crime.”

The courtroom went quiet.
