Miriam sat in an interrogation room with her lawyer.
She’d changed out of her wet clothes. Her hair was still damp.
The detective across the table slid a photo of the pool cover toward her.
“We found your prints on the button.”
“Of course. I pushed it. I was trying to stop the cover from closing.”
“Your son says you tied Mrs. Vance’s hands.”
“Daniel is confused. He’s always been weak.”
The detective didn’t blink.
“We also found your car packed. Cash. Passport. A one-way ticket to São Paulo.”
Miriam’s lawyer touched her arm.
She smiled for the first time.
“I was going on vacation.”
The detective leaned back.
“Funny. You didn’t mention that to anyone.”
Miriam didn’t answer.
