Chapter 3 - The Button

Miriam watched the water go still.

The stick was gone. The gap was gone. The pool cover sat flat and perfect.

She pressed the button again. The lock engaged with a soft click.

From inside the house, her phone buzzed.

She didn’t answer. Not yet.

She walked to the edge of the pool and looked down. The water was dark, but she could see shapes. One of them wasn’t moving.

Good.

She smoothed her skirt. Her heel was cracked. She’d broken it on the stone steps earlier. She didn’t remember when.

The phone buzzed again.

She answered. “It’s done.”

“All three?”

“All three.”

“Clean?”

“The pool cover is locked. It will look like an accident.”

A pause.

“Daniel’s in there.”

Miriam didn’t blink. “Daniel made his choice.”

She ended the call and put the phone back in her pocket.

The sun was hot. The water looked calm. She almost smiled.

Then she heard tires on the gravel.

A car door slammed.

“Mrs. Vance? Mail’s here.”

Walter.

May you like

Miriam’s smile vanished.
