Chapter 11 - Blood in the Water

At the hospital, the doctors said the baby’s heart rate was dropping.
They cut Elena’s dress off in the ER. Her wrists were raw, her ankles bruised. Her stomach was tight.
A doctor named Patel said, “We need to do an emergency C-section.”
Elena grabbed Rosa’s hand. “Don’t leave me.”
“I’m not going anywhere, mija.”
They wheeled her into the OR. The lights were too bright. The anesthesiologist’s hands were cold.
Then everything went quiet.
Elena heard a beeping. Fast, then slow.
Somebody said, “She’s crashing.”
She tried to breathe. She couldn’t.
The last thing she saw was the clock on the wall. 3:47 p.m.
May you like
Then nothing.
