Chapter 10 - The Phone

Rosa pulled a phone from her apron pocket.

It was wrapped in two Ziploc bags. The screen was cracked, but it turned on.

She handed it to Davis.

“I recorded everything.”

The cop looked at her like she’d handed him a live snake.

“You recorded it?”

“I didn’t trust them.”

Davis pressed play.

The audio was muffled at first, then clear. Water splashing. Elena’s scream. Daniel’s voice: “That baby will never get out of this pool.”

Then Miriam’s voice: “No one is going to save you.”

The cop looked up.

Miriam’s hand went to her chest. “That’s not—that’s out of context.”

Davis kept listening.

There was a long pause on the recording. Then a thud. Glass closing.

Then Rosa’s voice, underwater, garbled: “Hold on, mija.”

The audio cut.

Davis looked at Rosa.

“How long have you been recording?”

May you like

“Since the day Mrs. Vance fired the old gardener.”
