Chapter 7 - No Air

Walter’s hearing aid squealed when he bent over the pool.

He’d seen a hand. Or maybe a shadow. His eyes weren’t what they used to be.

“Mrs. Vance?” He called out. “You got somebody in there?”

Miriam came around the corner. Her face was calm.

“Just the pool cleaner, Walter. It’s on a timer.”

Walter squinted at the water. The cover was cracked. A thin line ran across the glass.

“That don’t look right.”

“It’s fine.” Miriam stepped in front of him. “You can leave the mail on the table.”

Walter didn’t move. He could hear something. A thumping. Faint, like a heartbeat.

“Is that the pump?”

“Yes.”

“Kind of loud.”

Miriam’s jaw tightened. “I’ll have it serviced.”

Walter looked down again. There were bubbles under the glass. And something dark spreading.

“Is that blood?”

Miriam grabbed his arm. “You need to go home, Walter.”

But Walter pulled away.

He walked to the control panel near the house. It had one big red button.

May you like

He pressed it.
