Chapter 1 - Under the Glass

Elena’s lungs were already on fire. Her tied hands scraped against the pool floor, and every kick sent her deeper.

Rosa’s arm was the only thing holding her up. The old maid’s grip was iron, but her legs were shaking.

Above them, the glass cover slid across the water like a slow guillotine.

Miriam stood there, phone in one hand, not moving. Not smiling. Just watching.

Daniel was thrashing somewhere to Elena’s right. His elbow caught Rosa in the jaw. Rosa didn’t let go.

The cover clicked into place.

No air.

Elena pushed her face against the glass. Her mouth opened, but only water rushed in.

Through the blur, Miriam bent down. Her lips moved. Elena couldn’t hear the words, but she didn’t need to.

“No one is going to save you.”

Then Rosa’s hand found Elena’s palm. Something cold. Small. Sharp.

A knife.

The handle was loose. The blade was rusted. But it was real.

Elena’s fingers closed around it.

She couldn’t see Rosa’s face in the green dark, but she felt the old woman nod.

Then Daniel grabbed Rosa’s ankle and pulled.
