Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Disappeared

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing.

Daniel holding the second glass.

Eleanor watching.

Maria screaming.

And my father writing a warning about a man I thought I knew.

The worst part wasn't discovering the lies.

The worst part was realizing how many moments of my life had been real to me and fake to everyone else.

At 4:17 in the morning, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I remembered Daniel's words.

Michael.

I answered.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a man's voice came through.

"Claire Carter?"

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Who is this?"

"My name is Michael Hawthorne."

The room felt colder.

Daniel's brother.

The man Eleanor erased from every family story.

"Why are you calling me?"

A long silence followed.

Then:

"Because I should have called you three years ago."

I stood up.

"What does that mean?"

His voice became lower.

"It means your husband isn't the only person who failed you."

I hated that sentence.

Because it was true.

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

I almost laughed.

"Another person hiding secrets?"

"No."

His voice cracked.

"I'm hiding from my mother."

---

We met in an old coffee shop outside the city.

No cameras.

No luxury.

No Hawthorne mansion.

Just a tired-looking man sitting alone in the corner.

Michael looked nothing like Daniel.

Daniel always looked controlled.

Perfect.

Michael looked like someone who had spent years fighting a war nobody knew existed.

When he saw me, he stood.

"You look like your father."

I immediately became cold.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Good.

I didn't need another person using my father to get close to me.

"I'm sorry."

I sat down.

"Everyone says that."

Michael nodded.

"I know."

For a moment, we just stared at each other.

Then he placed a folder on the table.

"I have proof."

I didn't touch it.

"What proof?"

"That Eleanor planned everything."

I looked at him.

"Everything?"

Michael nodded.

"Your father's death."

My chest tightened.

"The attack on you."

A pause.

"And the marriage between you and Daniel."

I looked away.

That last one hurt differently.

"Daniel was part of it."

Michael didn't defend him.

That surprised me.

"Yes."

The honesty caught me off guard.

"Then why are you helping me?"

Michael looked down.

"Because I spent my whole life watching my mother destroy people."

He opened the folder.

"And because Daniel was too weak to stop her."

---

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Bank records.

And one photo that made my blood freeze.

Daniel.

Five years earlier.

Standing beside Eleanor.

Holding a file.

The date was before we met.

I stared at it.

Michael whispered:

"That was the day your father discovered their plan."

I looked at him.

"What was inside that file?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Your medical records."

I felt sick.

"My medical records?"

"They wanted to know if you could have children."

My hand moved to my stomach.

The baby.

May you like

They had been planning before I even knew.
