Chapter 19 - The Choice Daniel Had To Make

Victor tried to escape before the police arrived.
Daniel stopped him.
I watched my husband block the door.
A year ago, I would have seen a hero.
Now I saw something more complicated.
A man trying to become someone better.
Victor laughed.
"You're stopping me?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Yes."
"You are just like your mother."
The words hit him.
I saw it.
The old wound.
The old fear.
But Daniel didn't move.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"I was."
Then he opened the door.
Police entered.
And for the first time...
Daniel chose the right side before it was too late.
---
Later that night, we sat outside.
No mansion.
No cameras.
No lies.
Just two people surrounded by silence.
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness."
I looked at him.
"No."
He nodded.
"I know."
A strange thing happened.
I believed him.
Not because I trusted him completely.
Because he wasn't asking me to.
"I hate what you did."
"I know."
"I don't know if I can ever forget."
"I know."
I looked at him.
"Stop saying you know."
A small, sad smile appeared.
"Sorry."
Despite everything...
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because that was the Daniel I remembered.
Imperfect.
Awkward.
Human.
---
The next morning, Thomas Reed called.
His voice sounded stronger.
"There is one more thing."
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
"What now?"
He hesitated.
"Your father left one final instruction."
"What instruction?"
Thomas answered:
"If Claire discovers the truth, she must never accept the company."
I froze.
"What?"
Daniel looked at me.
Thomas continued:
"Because the company was never the inheritance."
My heart started racing.
"Then what was?"
A pause.
Then:
"Your father's final words were..."
I held my breath.
"Give Claire the choice her family stole from her."
The call ended.
And I realized something.
May you like
My father didn't leave me an empire.
He left me a decision.
