Chapter 1 - The Glass I Was Never Supposed To Drink

I used to think the most terrifying sound in the world was a scream.
I was wrong.
The most terrifying sound was silence.
The kind of silence that filled a room when everyone already knew the truth except you.
That night, I sat at the long marble dining table inside the Hawthorne mansion, one hand resting over my six-month pregnant belly, the other holding a glass of warm milk.
A simple glass of milk.
That was the cruelest part.
Nothing about it looked dangerous.
No strange color.
No strange smell.
Just milk.
The same milk Daniel brought me every night because he knew I couldn't sleep during pregnancy.
At least, that was what I believed.
"Drink it," Eleanor said from across the table.
My mother-in-law smiled politely.
Too politely.
"You need to take care of my grandchild."
I forced a small smile.
"I know."
Daniel sat beside me.
He didn't look at me.
That was the first thing I noticed.
My husband always looked at me.
Even during arguments.
Even when he was angry.
But that night, his eyes stayed fixed on the table.
"Daniel?"
He finally looked up.
"What?"
The answer was strange.
Not because of the word.
Because of the way he said it.
Like I had interrupted something important.
I lowered the glass.
"Are you okay?"
A small muscle moved in his jaw.
"I'm fine."
I wanted to believe him.
God, I wanted to.
Because the alternative was impossible.
The man sitting beside me was the same man who slept with his hand around mine when we lost our first baby.
The same man who cried harder than I did.
The same man who promised me:
"Claire, I will protect you from anyone."
Anyone.
I never thought I had to be protected from him.
Then Maria screamed.
"Mrs. Claire, don't drink that!"
The glass slipped from my fingers.
Not because she touched it.
Because of the fear in her voice.
Maria had worked for this family for thirty years.
She never panicked.
Never.
The glass hit the marble floor.
Milk spread across the white stone.
Everyone froze.
"What are you doing?" Eleanor snapped.
Maria didn't answer.
She walked toward the spilled milk.
Then she looked at the small decorative plant beside the table.
The leaves began to curl.
Slowly.
One by one.
My hand moved over my stomach.
"No..."
The word barely came out.
No.
No.
No.
My baby.
The room suddenly felt too small.
I looked at Daniel.
Waiting.
Begging.
Not with words.
Just with my eyes.
Tell me this isn't real.
Tell me I am wrong.
Tell me you are still my husband.
But Daniel didn't move.
He didn't call for help.
He didn't scream at his mother.
He simply looked at the spilled milk.
Then he looked at Eleanor.
And my mother-in-law gave him the smallest nod.
That was when something inside me broke.
Not because Eleanor wanted me gone.
I had suspected that for months.
Not because she hated me.
She had never hidden that.
It broke because Daniel knew.
My husband knew.
The person I trusted with my life knew exactly what was happening.
And he stayed silent.
"Daniel..."
My voice cracked.
He looked at me.
For one second, I saw pain in his eyes.
Real pain.
Then it disappeared.
"I'm sorry."
Those two words hurt more than anything else.
Because sorry meant he knew.
The dining room doors opened.
A servant walked in carrying another glass.
My blood turned cold.
Daniel stood.
"Claire, please."
I stepped back.
"Please what?"
His face changed.
Like he was tired.
Like I was making this harder than it needed to be.
"Stop fighting."
I stared at him.
"Fighting?"
My laugh came out broken.
"You tried to kill my baby."
Eleanor sighed.
"Don't be dramatic."
I looked at her.
Then at Daniel.
And finally, I understood.
They weren't angry because they were caught.
They were angry because they had failed.
Daniel reached for the second glass.
Maria moved in front of me.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
But strong.
"You will have to go through me first."
Daniel looked at the old woman.
"Move."
Maria shook her head.
"No."
A strange thing happened.
Daniel looked afraid.
Not of Maria.
Of what she knew.
Then the lights suddenly went out.
The mansion fell into darkness.
And in that darkness, someone whispered from behind me:
"Claire... your husband wasn't the only one who lied to you."
