Chapter 22 - The Last Door

Two years later, I returned to the Hawthorne mansion one final time.
The government had sold it.
The rooms were empty.
The walls were silent.
No Eleanor.
No fear.
No secrets.
I walked into the dining room.
The place where everything started.
The place where I almost lost my child.
The place where I lost the illusion of my marriage.
But also the place where I found myself.
Maria stood beside me.
"You sure you want to be here?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
She smiled.
"You were always stronger than you believed."
I looked around.
"No."
A pause.
"I was just finally tired of being afraid."
---
I placed the final document on the table.
The last piece of evidence.
The last secret.
Then I walked away.
Not because I lost.
Because I was done fighting battles that belonged to the past.
Outside, Daniel waited.
Our daughter was in his arms.
She laughed when she saw me.
And that sound...
That simple, beautiful sound...
Was everything Eleanor tried to take.
May you like
But she failed.
