Chapter 3 - The Inheritance They Were Willing To Kill For

I stared at the phone long after the call ended.

Daniel's name was still glowing on the screen.

A name that used to mean home.

Safety.

Love.

Now it felt like a warning.

Maria watched me carefully.

"What did he say?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Because saying it out loud would make it real.

Finally, I whispered:

"He said my father left something behind."

Maria's face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"You know about it?"

She looked away.

That hurt more than I expected.

"Maria."

She closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

The words came out softly.

But I was tired of apologies.

Everyone was sorry after the damage was done.

"How long have you known?"

She didn't answer.

"How long?"

"Since before your wedding."

The room went silent.

I looked at the woman who saved my life.

The woman I trusted.

And suddenly, I wondered how many pieces of my life everyone else had been holding while I was the only person who knew nothing.

"You knew Daniel's family was dangerous."

Maria looked down.

"Yes."

"You knew my father was afraid of them."

"Yes."

"You knew something was hidden."

"Yes."

I laughed once.

A small, painful sound.

"Everyone knew something except me."

Maria stepped closer.

"Claire..."

"No."

I wiped my face.

"Don't tell me you were protecting me."

She stopped.

Because she knew.

That was exactly what she was going to say.

And maybe months ago, I would have believed it.

But not tonight.

Not after seeing my husband hold a poisoned glass.

---

The next morning, I went to my father's old house.

The place had been empty for almost three years.

Since he died.

I had avoided it.

Not because I didn't miss him.

Because I missed him too much.

Every room still looked like him.

The old leather chair.

The books stacked beside the window.

The coffee mug he refused to throw away even after the handle broke.

I stood in the doorway of his office.

And for the first time in years, I felt angry.

"Dad..."

My voice cracked.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Of course, he didn't answer.

He couldn't.

I walked to his desk.

Maria stood behind me.

Quiet.

Watching.

"Where?"

She looked confused.

"Where what?"

"The thing he left."

She hesitated.

Then slowly walked toward the bookshelf.

She touched three books.

Pulled them out.

Nothing happened.

Then she pushed the wooden panel behind them.

A small click echoed.

I stepped back.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a black box.

No lock.

No decoration.

Just a name carved into the top.

Mine.

CLAIRE CARTER.

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

A flash drive.

And a letter.

My father's handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

Claire,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.

I sat down.

My knees suddenly felt weak.

Maria looked away.

Giving me privacy.

But I couldn't look away from the page.

I continued reading.

The Hawthorne family will come for what belongs to you.

Do not trust their kindness.

Do not trust their apologies.

And most importantly...

Do not trust the man who says he loves you if he has already chosen their side.

My fingers went numb.

Daniel.

My father had written Daniel's name without writing it.

Because he knew.

He knew.

---

The flash drive contained only one video.

I almost didn't play it.

Almost.

Then I saw the date.

Three months before my wedding.

I clicked.

The screen showed my father sitting across from someone.

Someone whose face was hidden.

But the voice...

I knew that voice.

Eleanor.

"You cannot stop us, Robert."

My father's expression was cold.

"You won't touch my daughter."

Eleanor laughed.

"You already gave her to us."

My heart stopped.

The video continued.

"I know about your son."

My father's voice changed.

"What did you do?"

Eleanor leaned closer.

"We didn't do anything."

A pause.

"Daniel chose."

The video ended.

I sat there frozen.

Daniel chose.

Not forced.

Not trapped.

Chose.

---

That evening, Daniel came to my father's house.

I knew he was outside before he knocked.

Because my body recognized him before my mind did.

That was the cruelest part.

My heart still reacted to him.

Even after everything.

Maria opened the door.

Daniel looked different.

No expensive suit.

No perfect hair.

Just a tired man who looked like he hadn't slept.

"Claire."

I stayed where I was.

"Don't."

He swallowed.

"I need to explain."

"No."

"Please."

I looked at him.

"Did you know my father?"

Silence.

Too long.

A second too long.

And that was enough.

"You did."

Daniel looked down.

"I met him."

"When?"

"Before we got married."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Why did you meet my father behind my back?"

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

But regret was not the same as innocence.

Finally, he whispered:

"Because your father found out what my mother was planning."

I stared.

"What was she planning?"

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time...

He looked truly afraid.

"To take your company."

I waited.

"That's all?"

He didn't speak.

My voice became colder.

"Daniel."

He looked at me.

"Tell me the whole truth."

His lips parted.

Then he said:

"Your father didn't die naturally."

May you like

The room went completely silent.

And every piece of my life changed again.
