Chapter 13 - The Man Who Held The Missing Truth

The man's name was Robert Hale.
He was my father's private investigator.
The man everyone thought disappeared.
The man Eleanor wanted forgotten.
"I was there the night your father died."
My throat tightened.
"Then why didn't you come forward?"
He looked ashamed.
"Because I was afraid."
Another person.
Another excuse.
Another person who waited.
I almost walked away.
Then he said:
"Your father was alive when I found him."
I stopped.
"What?"
"He survived the crash."
The room went silent.
Daniel looked confused.
"I don't understand."
Robert looked at him.
"Your mother arrived before the ambulance."
Daniel's face changed.
No.
Not shock.
Horror.
"What did she do?"
Robert didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
---
The truth came out piece by piece.
The accident.
The cover-up.
The missing evidence.
Everything.
But one detail destroyed me.
Daniel had found out.
Three years ago.
He knew my father survived long enough to identify Eleanor.
And he stayed silent.
I looked at him.
"Is that true?"
Daniel looked broken.
"Yes."
I stepped back.
Again.
Another truth.
Another wound.
"I hate that you keep giving me reasons to leave."
Daniel whispered:
"I know."
"Do you?"
My eyes filled.
"Because every time I think I understand you, I find another door you locked."
He had no defense.
Because there wasn't one.
---
Then we heard a scream downstairs.
Eleanor.
Not afraid.
Angry.
The kind of anger that meant someone had finally touched something she couldn't control.
We ran down.
She was standing beside the fireplace.
Holding a folder.
"Nobody leaves this house."
Daniel looked at her.
"Mom."
She smiled.
"I spent years building this family."
She opened the folder.
"And I spent years making sure nobody could destroy it."
She threw the papers onto the table.
Legal documents.
Contracts.
Signatures.
My name.
My father's company.
Everything.
Then she said:
"Claire, you never inherited the empire."
I froze.
"What?"
She smiled.
May you like
"You inherited the trap."
