Chapter 5 - The Man Who Knew Too Much

Daniel didn't move.
Neither did I.
For a few seconds, the only sound in the room was the rain hitting the windows.
A normal sound.
A peaceful sound.
But nothing in my life felt peaceful anymore.
I held the phone tighter.
"Tell me."
Daniel's face went pale.
"Claire..."
"No."
My voice surprised even me.
It wasn't loud.
It wasn't angry.
It was worse.
It was calm.
"Not another half-truth."
Daniel swallowed.
I lifted the phone.
"Did you know about my father's brakes?"
His eyes dropped.
That tiny movement answered before his mouth did.
My stomach twisted.
"Daniel."
He took a breath.
"Yes."
The room seemed to tilt.
I stared at him.
A person can survive a lot.
A broken promise.
A lie.
A betrayal.
But there are some truths that feel impossible to place inside your head.
My husband knew my father was in danger.
My husband knew something happened.
And he still stood beside me every night.
"How long?"
Daniel didn't answer.
"How long did you know?"
"Claire..."
"HOW LONG?"
My voice cracked.
The baby moved suddenly.
I placed a hand over my stomach.
Daniel noticed.
For a second, his face broke.
The old Daniel appeared.
The man who would have rushed toward me.
The man who would have asked if I was okay.
But he stopped himself.
Maybe he finally understood he had lost the right.
"Three days."
I stared.
"Three days before he died."
My eyes burned.
"Three days."
I repeated the words because my mind refused to accept them.
"You knew my father might be killed..."
Daniel whispered:
"I didn't know he would die."
"But you knew there was danger."
"Yes."
"And you did nothing."
He closed his eyes.
"I was afraid."
I laughed.
A painful, empty laugh.
"Everyone is always afraid."
I walked toward him.
"You know what I am tired of?"
Daniel looked at me.
"People using fear as an excuse after they hurt me."
He had no answer.
Because it was true.
---
Daniel sat down.
He looked older.
Not like the powerful CEO everyone respected.
Like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.
"My mother told me your father was planning to destroy us."
I crossed my arms.
"My father?"
"She said he discovered what our family had done."
"What did your family do?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Fraud."
The word was quiet.
But heavy.
"Years ago, my grandfather built the company using illegal deals. My mother spent her life covering them."
"And my father found out."
Daniel nodded.
"He was going to expose everything."
I looked at him.
"And then he died."
Daniel didn't speak.
That silence was louder than anything.
---
The next morning, I went back to my father's office.
This time, I wasn't looking for secrets.
I was looking for proof.
Maria helped me search.
She opened old cabinets.
Checked old files.
Looked behind paintings.
Then she stopped.
"Claire."
I walked toward her.
She was holding a small envelope.
Not hidden.
Not locked.
Just placed behind a row of books.
Like my father wanted someone to find it.
The envelope had one word.
**DANIEL.**
My hands froze.
"No."
Maria looked at me.
"You don't have to open it."
But I already knew.
I had spent my entire marriage avoiding painful truths.
Not anymore.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My father's handwriting.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then you failed to protect her.
I stopped.
My breathing changed.
Maria looked at me.
"What does it say?"
I kept reading.
You need to understand something.
Eleanor doesn't love power.
She loves control.
She will destroy anyone who threatens it.
Including you.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Not because I felt sorry for Daniel.
Because my father knew.
He knew exactly what kind of man Daniel could become.
The letter continued.
I gave you a chance because I saw something good in you.
Do not prove me wrong.
I looked up.
Daniel wasn't just a traitor.
My father had trusted him.
And Daniel had failed us both.
---
That afternoon, Daniel called.
I almost didn't answer.
Almost.
"Claire."
His voice sounded exhausted.
"What?"
"I found something."
I said nothing.
"I know who sent that message."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Who?"
A pause.
Then:
"My brother."
I froze.
"Your brother?"
"Michael."
I remembered the name.
The brother everyone said disappeared.
The one Eleanor never mentioned.
"Why would your brother contact me?"
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Because he knows the truth about my father."
I sat down.
"And what truth is that?"
Daniel whispered:
"Michael was the last person who saw your father alive."
The call went silent.
Then he added:
"And Claire..."
"What?"
"He says my mother didn't just plan your father's death."
My heart started racing.
"What did he say?"
Daniel's voice cracked.
"She planned yours too."
The line went dead.
And for the first time since the poisoned milk...
I realized something terrifying.
May you like
Maybe Eleanor wasn't trying to take my inheritance.
Maybe she was trying to erase me completely.
