Chapter 23 - The Woman Who Chose Herself

People still ask me what saved me.

Some say Maria.

Some say my father's evidence.

Some say Daniel finally changing.

They are all partly right.

But they are wrong about the most important thing.

The person who saved me...

Was me.

The woman who held the poisoned glass.

The woman who discovered her husband betrayed her.

The woman who walked away from an empire instead of becoming another person controlled by it.

That woman survived.

Not because she never broke.

She did.

Not because she wasn't afraid.

She was.

But because every time life tried to decide who she was...

She chose again.

Years later, my daughter asked me:

"Mommy, were you scared?"

I smiled.

"Yes."

"Then how did you win?"

I looked at her.

And I answered:

"Because being scared doesn't mean you stop standing."

She smiled.

Then ran outside.

I watched her go.

And I finally understood something.

The night of the poisoned milk was not the night they almost destroyed me.

It was the night I stopped belonging to anyone else.

I was never just a wife.

Never just an heir.

Never just someone's daughter.

I was Claire.

And that was something nobody could ever steal from me.
