Chapter 11 - Returning To The House Of Lies

I thought leaving the Hawthorne mansion would make me feel free.
I was wrong.
Some places don't stay behind you.
They follow you.
The house appeared exactly as I remembered.
The same black gates.
The same perfect garden.
The same windows that always looked like someone was watching from inside.
Daniel parked the car.
Neither of us moved.
For the first time in years, we were sitting together without pretending.
No husband.
No wife.
No promises.
Just two people carrying the damage we had created.
"Claire."
I looked forward.
"What?"
His voice was quiet.
"If something happens tonight..."
I interrupted him.
"Don't."
He looked at me.
"Don't say goodbye like you already know you're going to fail."
The words surprised both of us.
Because for one second, it sounded like the old me.
The woman who still believed he could change.
Daniel looked away.
"I deserve that."
"Yes."
He nodded.
No excuses.
No arguments.
And somehow, that hurt more.
---
The front door opened before we knocked.
Eleanor was waiting.
Of course she was.
She wore a dark blue dress.
Elegant.
Calm.
Like she was welcoming guests to a dinner party.
Not facing the woman she tried to destroy.
"Claire."
She smiled.
"You came back."
I stepped inside.
"I want the truth."
Eleanor laughed softly.
"Everyone wants the truth until they hear it."
Maria's warning echoed in my head.
This house had secrets.
And secrets fought back.
"I know about my father."
For the first time, Eleanor's smile changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"You always were more like him than I expected."
My hands tightened.
"What did you do?"
Eleanor walked toward the fireplace.
"I did what people with power always do."
She looked at me.
"I protected myself."
"You killed him."
Silence.
Then she smiled.
"Prove it."
---
She had prepared for this.
I knew immediately.
The confidence.
The calmness.
The way she moved around the room.
This wasn't a confrontation.
It was a performance.
Then Daniel spoke.
"You knew I would come back."
Eleanor looked at her son.
The disappointment on her face was almost worse than anger.
"Of course."
She walked closer.
"You always come back."
Daniel looked down.
A small movement.
But I saw it.
The wound.
The child inside the man.
Eleanor had controlled him for decades.
"You were supposed to finish this."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"I know."
I turned toward him.
"What?"
Eleanor smiled.
"There it is."
She looked at me.
"Your husband was never the hero you wanted him to be."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because she was right.
He wasn't.
Not yet.
---
Then Eleanor pulled something from a drawer.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
My father's handwriting.
My heart stopped.
"Where did you get that?"
She smiled.
"Your father gave it to me."
Impossible.
"No."
"Oh yes."
She handed it to me.
"Open it."
I didn't want to.
Every truth I learned destroyed another piece of my life.
But I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
Claire,
If you are reading this, trust Daniel.
My hands started shaking.
I looked at Daniel.
Eleanor laughed.
"Interesting, isn't it?"
Because the woman who tried to kill me was holding the one thing that could make me forgive him.
May you like
And I had no idea if it was real.
