Chapter 21 - The Man I Forgave But Did Not Forget

Six months passed.

The trial ended.

Eleanor lost everything.

Her wealth.

Her influence.

Her control.

But the strangest thing happened.

After she lost power...

She looked smaller.

Not weaker.

Just human.

And maybe that was the most shocking part.

For years, I imagined my revenge would feel satisfying.

It didn't.

Justice felt quieter than revenge.

Cleaner.

---

Daniel changed too.

Not overnight.

People don't become better because they apologize once.

Real change is uncomfortable.

Slow.

Messy.

There were days I hated him.

Days I remembered the glass.

Days I remembered his silence.

And he accepted every one of them.

He never said:

"Can't you move on?"

He never said:

"I already apologized."

He simply showed up.

Every single day.

Not asking for a reward.

Just trying.

---

One afternoon, I found him assembling a crib.

The same way he had years earlier.

Except now his hands were shaking.

I watched him struggle with one piece for almost ten minutes.

"You know that piece is backwards."

He looked up.

Then looked at the crib.

Then sighed.

"I knew that."

I raised an eyebrow.

"No, you didn't."

A small laugh escaped him.

And it surprised me.

Because I realized something.

I missed that.

Not the old Daniel.

Not the man who lied.

The person underneath.

The person he had buried for years.

---

"You don't have to forgive me."

I looked at him.

"I know."

He smiled slightly.

"You really hate when people say that."

"Yes."

A pause.

"But sometimes it's true."

I sat beside him.

"I forgive you."

His eyes lifted.

But before he could speak, I continued.

"That doesn't mean what happened disappears."

He nodded.

"I know."

I smiled.

May you like

"Good answer."
