Chapter 2 - The Voice In The Dark

The first thing I heard was my own breathing.
Fast.
Uneven.
Scared.
The second thing I heard was someone running.
The mansion that always felt too big suddenly felt like a trap.
"Claire?"
Maria grabbed my arm.
"I'm here."
Her voice was the only thing keeping me standing.
The emergency lights slowly came on.
A weak red glow filled the dining room.
Daniel was gone.
The second glass was gone too.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Eleanor calmly fixed the sleeve of her dress.
Like nothing had happened.
Like a pregnant woman almost drinking poison was just an inconvenience during dinner.
I stared at her.
"Where is he?"
Eleanor looked confused.
"Who?"
I almost laughed.
Almost.
"Your son."
She picked up her wine glass.
"Probably doing what he always does."
I felt my hands shaking.
"What does that mean?"
She took a slow sip.
"It means Daniel cleans up his mistakes."
That sentence stayed with me.
Not because it made sense.
Because it sounded practiced.
Like she had been saying things like that to him his entire life.
Maria stepped closer.
"Mrs. Claire, we need to leave."
I looked at her.
"Leave?"
She nodded.
"Now."
I wanted to ask a hundred questions.
Why did Daniel do this?
How long had he planned it?
Did he ever love me?
But my body made the decision before my mind could.
A sharp pain moved through my stomach.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
Maria's face changed instantly.
"Claire?"
"I'm okay."
It was a lie.
A bad one.
Maria knew.
She always knew.
"No. You are not."
She helped me toward the door.
Behind us, Eleanor spoke.
"You really think walking away changes anything?"
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because something in her voice made me turn around.
She wasn't angry.
She was certain.
"You don't understand this family," Eleanor said.
"This family?"
I looked around the room.
The expensive paintings.
The gold decorations.
The perfect flowers.
Everything looked beautiful.
Everything felt rotten.
"You mean your family."
Eleanor smiled.
"No, Claire."
She placed her glass down.
"I mean yours."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
She didn't answer.
And somehow, that was worse.
---
Maria drove faster than I had ever seen her drive.
The old woman who always moved slowly through the house was now gripping the steering wheel with both hands.
Rain hit the windshield.
The road blurred.
I sat in the passenger seat holding my stomach.
Trying not to cry.
Trying not to fall apart.
"Maria."
"Yes?"
"Tell me the truth."
Silence.
Just the sound of rain.
Then:
"I don't know everything."
I turned toward her.
"But you know something."
She tightened her grip.
"Yes."
"What?"
Maria swallowed.
"Your father knew the Hawthornes were dangerous."
I froze.
"My father?"
She nodded.
"He warned me before he died."
The air disappeared from my lungs.
"My father never met Eleanor."
Maria looked at me.
"Yes, he did."
I stared.
"No."
"He did."
She took a breath.
"And he was afraid of her."
I looked out the window.
The city lights passed by like ghosts.
All those years.
All those dinners.
All those family gatherings.
My father never mentioned her.
Why?
Then I remembered something.
A conversation from years ago.
A conversation I thought meant nothing.
I was twenty-eight.
Daniel had just proposed.
My father had been quiet the entire night.
I asked him:
"Dad, are you happy for me?"
He smiled.
But it wasn't a happy smile.
It was a worried one.
Then he said:
"Claire, sometimes the person holding your hand is also the person holding the knife."
At the time, I thought he was talking about marriage.
Now I wasn't sure.
---
We reached a small private clinic outside the city.
Maria helped me inside.
The doctor checked the baby immediately.
Those minutes felt endless.
I watched the monitor.
Waiting.
Begging.
Finally, the doctor smiled.
"The baby is okay."
My eyes closed.
A breath escaped my body.
A breath I didn't know I was holding.
"Thank you."
The doctor looked at me carefully.
"Mrs. Hawthorne, you need to understand something."
I looked up.
"If you had swallowed even a small amount..."
She stopped.
She didn't finish.
She didn't need to.
I understood.
When we left the clinic, my phone rang.
I almost ignored it.
Then I saw the name.
Daniel.
Maria looked at the screen.
"Don't answer."
I stared at it.
The phone kept vibrating.
Part of me wanted to throw it away.
Another part wanted answers.
Finally, I answered.
"Why?"
There was silence.
Then his voice.
Broken.
"Claire..."
I closed my eyes.
Hearing him was worse than I expected.
"Why did you do it?"
"I didn't want you to get hurt."
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"Daniel, I almost drank poison."
"I know."
"Because of you."
Silence.
Then he whispered:
"I know."
For one second, I heard the old Daniel.
The man who loved me.
The man who made mistakes.
Then I remembered the glass.
The second glass.
The way he stood there.
"Where are you?"
I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Daniel."
Finally:
"I'm trying to fix this."
I looked at Maria.
She shook her head.
No.
Don't believe him.
Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.
"Claire... my mother wasn't trying to kill you because of the baby."
I stopped breathing.
"What?"
His voice became quieter.
"She was trying to make sure you never found out what your father left you."
A long silence followed.
Then he said:
"Your inheritance isn't money."
I gripped the phone.
"Then what is it?"
Daniel whispered:
"The evidence that can destroy my entire family."
The call ended.
And for the first time that night...
I realized the poisoned milk was never the biggest secret.
It was only the beginning.
