Chapter 18 - The Enemy Who Was Never Gone

The message was simple.

One sentence.

STOP DIGGING.

I stared at the words.

A year ago, that message would have terrified me.

Tonight?

It made me angry.

Because I was tired.

Tired of people deciding what I could handle.

Tired of powerful people believing fear was a leash.

I deleted the message.

Daniel watched me.

"You are not scared."

I looked at him.

"I am."

He seemed surprised.

I continued:

"But I am tired of being scared."

For the first time in months, he looked proud of me.

That hurt.

Because part of me still wanted him to be proud.

---

We returned to Carter Industries the next morning.

The board meeting was waiting.

Some members wanted control.

Some wanted me removed.

They thought the scandals had weakened me.

They were wrong.

I entered the room carrying my father's documents.

Nobody spoke.

The chairman cleared his throat.

"Claire, given recent events..."

I placed the papers on the table.

"Before we discuss my position, we need to discuss yours."

The room changed.

"What is this?"

"The original ownership records."

Everyone became silent.

One board member stood.

"Where did you get those?"

I looked at him.

"That is an interesting question."

Because the fear on his face told me something.

He already knew.

---

After the meeting, I followed him.

His name was Victor Hale.

A respected businessman.

A trusted advisor.

Someone who had worked with my father for twenty years.

Someone who had access to everything.

I confronted him.

"How long?"

He looked confused.

"Excuse me?"

"How long have you been helping them?"

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"I don't know what you mean."

I stepped closer.

"My father trusted you."

Victor looked away.

That was when I knew.

---

He finally admitted it.

Not everything.

Never everything.

People like him never did.

But enough.

Eleanor had not worked alone.

There was a network.

People in companies.

Banks.

Law firms.

People who benefited from keeping the truth buried.

Daniel looked sick.

"My mother built all this?"

Victor looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"Your mother inherited it."

That sentence changed everything.

Because Eleanor wasn't the beginning.

May you like

She was only the latest person protecting the secret.
