CHAPTER 40: The Legacy We Choose

A year later, the city was different. Streets were safer, contracts were public, and the free clinic had expanded into three more neighborhoods. Victor still had enemies—he always would—but they no longer controlled the streets or the halls of power.

One evening, we sat on the porch of our home, watching the sun set over the skyline Victor had built brick by brick, then rebuilt promise by promise.

“Your grandfather thought legacy was what you left behind,” he said softly. “I thought it was what you took. But you taught me… legacy is what you give away.”

I leaned my head against his shoulder. “We’re still here. Still standing.”

“Because we stand together,” Jude said, stepping out onto the porch with two mugs of coffee. “Always.”

Somewhere down in the city, a siren wailed—but it was followed by the sound of laughter, of music, of life going on loud and bright.

We hadn’t erased the past. We’d learned from it. And in the end, that was enough.
