CHAPTER 37: The Election

Six months later, a group of community leaders approached Victor with an offer he’d never imagined: run for mayor.

He hesitated. “I’ve spent my whole life outside the law. Why would anyone trust me to lead it?”

“Because you know what it’s like on both sides,” one woman said. “You know where the cracks are. You know how to fix them.”

Jude put his hand on his brother’s shoulder. “You won’t win everyone over. But you’ll fight for everyone. That’s enough.”

He announced his candidacy on the steps of our free clinic. No big rallies, no flashy ads—just a promise to make sure every voice was heard, every contract was fair, and every person had the same chance Mia had been given.
