CHAPTER 39: The Oath

Inauguration day dawned bright and clear. As Victor took the oath of office, I stood beside him, holding the silver stethoscope he’d given me. Jude stood on his other side, hand resting lightly on his shoulder. Marcus and Elias watched from the front row.
After the ceremony, we walked back to the clinic together. A little girl ran up to me, holding a drawing: two men, one girl, and a city full of light.
“That’s us,” she said simply.
I looked at Victor, and for the first time in my life, I didn’t see a man who ruled from the shadows. I saw a man who’d stepped into the light so everyone else could follow.
