CHAPTER 23: The Brothers Reunited

Over the next weeks, Jude came to stay with us often. He laughed at our old stories, told us about fixing cars and raising his daughter alone, and slowly let himself accept that he belonged in this life too. Victor gave him a seat on the company board—not out of charity, but because he was sharp, honest, and knew how to see people for who they really were.
One night, they sat on the porch drinking coffee, just talking like brothers should have done their whole lives.
“I thought you were the lucky one,” Jude said. “All this… everything.”
“I thought you were the free one,” Victor answered. “No one watching your every move. No one expecting anything from you.”
They both laughed then—soft, sad, and relieved.
