CHAPTER 11: The Alliance

By dawn, Elias had given us everything—names, dates, safe houses, bank records, every detail of Julian’s network that had been hidden even from Victor. He told us about the politicians on the payroll, the shipments of illegal goods moving through the docks, the plan to take over the entire city’s underworld within six months.

“I want to help you take it all apart,” Elias said, sitting at the long table in Victor’s office as agents from the state task force arrived. “I want to make sure no one else loses someone they love to lies and greed.”

Victor placed a hand on his shoulder. “Then we do this together. But you’ll have to answer for what you’ve done. The courts will decide your fate.”

“I know,” Elias said quietly. “And I’ll accept whatever sentence they give me. It’s the least I deserve.”

Over the next week, the city shook to its foundations. Arrests were made across every level of power—city council members, police captains, business leaders who’d taken bribes and looked the other way. The papers called it the biggest corruption scandal in the city’s history. But for us, it was about something simpler: clearing the air.

One afternoon, I walked into Victor’s office to find him staring at a photo of the three old partners—himself, Julian, Elias—young and smiling, before the money and the lies had torn them apart.

“People think power is about winning,” he said softly. “But it’s mostly just about losing things you never thought you’d let go of.”
