CHAPTER 26: The Fire

We arrived to find flames leaping high, families crying as they watched their livelihoods burn. Victor stood silent for a moment, then turned to Jude and me. “We build it back tonight. Every single stall. Every single shelf.”

By midnight, trucks had arrived with lumber, tarps, tools, and supplies. Hundreds of people showed up—neighbors, employees, rivals turned allies—working side by side in the light of lanterns and headlights. Hale’s men watched from the shadows, but they didn’t dare step forward. Not against all of us.

By dawn, the market stood again—scorched in places, but whole.

“Tell your boss,” Victor said to one of the men who’d been sent to watch, “that this city doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to the people who show up.”
