Julian hired Dr. Lena Foster, an independent geriatric specialist.
Martha passed every cognitive test.
Her memory was normal for her age.
The sedative, however, could create confusion if administered repeatedly.
Lena examined Martha’s vitamin bottles.
Two capsules contained powdered medication that did not belong there.
Bianca had been manufacturing the symptoms used to declare Martha incompetent.
Julian felt physically ill.
Then Martha told him why Bianca wanted her declared incompetent.
The Hale mansion was not Julian’s.
Not entirely.
Julian’s late father had placed it in a family trust.
Martha held a controlling life interest.
If she died, Julian inherited.
If she were declared incapacitated, a designated trustee could manage it.
Julian asked who the alternate trustee was.
Martha hesitated.
“Your uncle Raymond.”
Julian had not spoken to Raymond Hale in eight years.
Raymond had nearly bankrupted Hale Development before Julian forced him off the board.
Mateo searched recent visitor records.
Raymond had entered the mansion four times while Julian was overseas.
Every visit had been approved by Bianca.
The plot was no longer about an ambitious fiancée.
