Chapter 19 - Martha’s Birthday

Martha turned eighty.
No ballroom.
No donors.
No press.
Twelve people gathered in her small garden.
She wore purple.
Julian noticed.
“The pool night?”
She smiled.
“I refuse to let that woman own a color.”
They ate cake.
Martha told embarrassing stories about Julian as a child.
Then she became serious.
“I owe you something.”
“You already testified.”
“Not that.”
She handed him Henry’s final letter.
His father had written it before his death.
Henry apologized for cowardice.
For Celeste.
For Raymond.
For teaching Julian that protecting a family name mattered more than protecting people.
Julian read it twice.
Then he folded it.
Martha asked.
“Do you forgive him?”
“I don’t know.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
Julian looked at her.
“Good?”
“Forgiveness should never be another family obligation.”
He kissed her forehead.

That was the healthiest thing anyone in the Hale family had said in decades.
