Chapter 9 - The Confrontation

Clara found Andrew at his apartment.

He was packing, preparing to move out of his mother's penthouse.

"Andrew."

He turned.

"Clara."

"I know about the gambling."

"You know?"

"I know about the loan. I know about the startup. I know you used the estate as collateral."

"Clara, I was going to tell you."

"Were you?"

"After the wedding."

"When you were legally tied to me and couldn't leave."

"Clara, it's not like that."

"It is exactly like that."

"How did you find out?"

"I have resources now. Resources you never thought I'd have."

He sank onto the couch.

"What's going to happen to me?"

"Your mother is being evicted from her penthouse next week. The assets are being liquidated to pay the debts you accumulated."

"Andrew, I didn't come here to offer help."

"Then why?"

"Because I needed to see your face."

"I needed to see the moment you realized you had lost everything."

"Clara, please..."

She walked to the door.

"You had every chance to be honest. You chose to hide. You chose lies. You chose your mother over the woman who loved you."

"Goodbye, Andrew."
