Chapter 8 - The Truth About Andrew
Julia entered Clara's office with new information.
"Miss Mason, we've uncovered some interesting details about Andrew Whitlock."
"Tell me."
"During your engagement, he was still in contact with his ex-fiancée."
"Margaret?"
"Yes. They were meeting regularly."
"For what purpose?"
"It appears Andrew was planning to keep Margaret as a backup option."
"In case you didn't inherit your mother's fortune?"
"Exactly."
Clara shook her head.
"He never changed."
"He never intended to change."
She stood.
"What else?"
"Andrew also took out a loan against Whitestone without your knowledge. He used it to invest in a failing tech startup. The startup went bankrupt."
"How much?"
"Four hundred thousand dollars."
"That explains why the estate was sold to the bank in the first place."
Julia nodded.
"Andrew's gambling problem goes back years. He's been covering it up with family money. Patricia knew. She's been covering it up for him."
Clara sat down heavily.
"I was engaged to a liar."
