Chapter 8 - Grandma's Secret

Grandma called me from the hospital.

Her voice was weaker than before.

But her words were clear.

"Claire, there's something else I need to tell you."

"What?"

"When I die, your mother will inherit everything."

"Okay. That's what the will says."

"Not anymore. I changed it last month."

"Changed it?"

"I made a new will. I gave everything to you."

I felt my knees go weak.

"Grandma, why?"

"Because I know you'll do the right thing."

"The right thing?"

"With the money. With the property. With my legacy. Your mother would have sold everything the day after my funeral. You'll use it to help people."

"Grandma, I don't want your money."

"That's exactly why I'm giving it to you."

"Does Mom know?"

"She suspects. That's why she was so desperate to get the power of attorney."

"She wanted to control everything. In case you changed your mind."

"Exactly."

I sat down heavily.

This changed everything.

"Grandma, when did you do this?"

"Last month. I had a lawyer come to my house. Your mother was at work. I made sure she didn't know."

"Who's the executor?"

"Your aunt Margaret. She's the only one I trust besides you."

"Does she know about everything? About the money? About the forgery?"

"Not everything. I didn't want to drag her into this until I had to."

"Grandma, why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"Because I was scared. If your mother found out she was cut out of the will, she might have done something worse."

"Worse than what she's already done?"

"She could have tried to kill me, Claire. People have killed for less."
