Chapter 14 - The Apology

The next day, Mom came back to the hospital with a letter.
She handed it to Grandma.
"I wrote this last night," she said. "Please read it."
Grandma opened the letter.
She read it slowly.
---
"Eleanor, I'm sorry for what I did. I'm sorry for stealing from you. I'm sorry for forging your signature. I'm sorry for taking your walker. I'm sorry for locking you in a room. I'm sorry for everything. I was scared. I was scared of being alone. I was scared of losing you. But that doesn't excuse what I did. I know that now. I'm going to get help. I'm going to change. I hope you can forgive me someday. Love, your daughter, Margaret."
---
Grandma finished reading.
She folded the letter carefully.
She looked at Mom.
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For writing this. For being honest."
"I'm still angry. I'm still hurt. But I appreciate the honesty."
Mom nodded.
"Can we try to rebuild?"
"I don't know. It's going to take time."
"I know. I'll wait."
