Chapter 20 - The New Beginning
We sat in Grandma's new room.
The sun was setting through the window.
Mom was sitting beside Grandma.
I was on the other side.

"Can you believe we're here?" Mom asked.
"No," Grandma said. "But I'm glad."
"Me too," I said.

Grandma looked at both of us.
"I have something to say."
"What?" Mom asked.
"I'm changing my will again."
Mom tensed.
"Eleanor—"
"Don't worry. I'm not taking you out of it."
Mom relaxed.
"I'm splitting everything equally between you and Claire."
"That's not necessary," I said.
"It's what I want."
She looked at Mom.
"You've earned the second chance."
She looked at me.
"You earned the trust."
She took both our hands.
"This is what family is supposed to be. Not control. Not fear. Not stealing. Love. Trust. Support."
Mom squeezed Grandma's hand.
"I love you, Eleanor."
"I love you too, Mom."

I looked at my mother.
I looked at my grandmother.
I looked at the sunset.
"I love both of you," I said.
"We love you too, Claire," Grandma said.
Mom reached for my hand.
"Thank you," she whispered. "For everything."
I squeezed her hand.
"You're welcome."

The sun set over the horizon.
The room filled with warm light.
We sat in silence.
Together.
Healing.

"Mom," I said. "Grandma."
"Yes?" they both said.
"I want us to make a pact."
"What kind of pact?" Grandma asked.
"We're never going to keep secrets from each other again. No more hiding. No more manipulation. No more lies."
Mom nodded.
"I can do that."
"So can I," Grandma said.
"Then let's promise."
We held hands.
"We promise," we said together.

It was a new beginning.
Not perfect.
Not easy.
But honest.
And that was enough.
