Chapter 12 - The Confession
Mom finally broke down.
"You want to know why I did it?"
"Yes."
"Because I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"Afraid of losing her. Afraid of losing the house. Afraid of losing everything."
"Mom, Grandma wasn't going anywhere."
"She was talking about selling the house and moving to Florida. She was going to leave me."
"Mom, that's not true."
"That's what I thought. I was so scared of being alone."
"That doesn't excuse what you did."
"I know. I know it doesn't."
She started crying.
"Claire, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
I didn't say anything.
I just let her cry.

After a few minutes, she calmed down.
"Do you know what it's like to be afraid all the time?"
"To be afraid of being abandoned?"
"Yes."
"I've been afraid too. But I never hurt anyone."
"I know. That's why you're better than me."
"Mom, I'm not better than you. I just made different choices."
"Then why did I make such bad choices?"
"I don't know. But I think you need to figure that out."
