Chapter 15 - The Settlement
The state attorney general's office agreed to a plea deal.
Mom would serve no prison time.
She would have to pay back the money she stole.
She would have to complete counseling.
She would have to stay away from Grandma until Grandma was ready to see her.
She accepted the deal.

Mara was disappointed.
"Claire, we had a strong case."
"I know. But Grandma didn't want to pursue it."
"Sometimes victims don't want to."
"She's old. She's tired. She just wants peace."
Mara nodded.
"I understand."
"But I want you to watch her. I want you to make sure she follows through with the deal."
"I will."

Grandma had her own conditions.
She wanted Mom to pay back every cent.
She wanted Mom to complete two years of counseling.
She wanted Mom to write a formal apology to the rest of the family.
Mom agreed to everything.
