Chapter 11 - The Decision

I decided to help with bail.
Not because I forgave my mother.
Not because I wanted to.
But because I wanted to have a conversation with her.
I wanted to understand why she did it.
I wanted to see if she could change.
---
I transferred the money.
Mom was released the next day.
She came to my house with her attorney.
"I don't know what to say," she said.
"You can start by apologizing to Grandma."
"I'm sorry."
"Say it to her. Not to me."
"She won't talk to me."
"Can you blame her?"
Mom sat down heavily.
"Claire, I don't know what happened. I don't know how things got so out of control."
"Things got out of control because you took control."
"I was just trying to help."
"You were trying to control. There's a difference."
---
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"What would you have done if you were in my position?"
"I would have asked for help. I would have been honest. I would have respected her boundaries."
"Mom, you took her walker. You locked her in a room."
"I thought I was doing what was best."
"For who? For her? Or for you?"
Mom was quiet.
"I need to know," I said. "If you can't admit what you did, you'll never change."
