Chapter 5 - The Evidence
Mara spent the next few hours gathering evidence.
She reviewed the power of attorney document.
She compared Grandma's known signatures to the forged one.
She took photographs of the walker and the laundry room.
She documented everything.

By midnight, we had a preliminary case.
Mom was looking at multiple felony charges: elder abuse, forgery, identity theft, and financial exploitation.
The state attorney general's office was going to prosecute.

I sat in the hospital waiting room with Mara.
"What's going to happen to my mother?" I asked.
"She's going to be arrested. Probably within the next forty-eight hours."
"She's going to fight this. She's going to say Grandma was confused."
"The document is clearly forged. We can prove it was her handwriting. And we have Grandma's testimony."
"Will she go to prison?"
"It depends. But yes, it's a possibility."
"What about the money?"
"We'll freeze her accounts. We'll recover as much of it as we can."
"Grandma's going to need a new place to live."
"Don't worry about that. I've already contacted social services. She'll be placed in a safe facility until she can make other arrangements."
"Thank you, Mara."
"Don't thank me yet. This is just the beginning."
