Chapter 10 - The Bail

I didn't know if I should help with bail.
I discussed it with Mara.
"Claire, you don't have to do anything. This isn't your responsibility."
"She's my mother."
"She's also a criminal."
"I know. But she's still my mother."
"Are you going to put up the money?"
"I don't know yet."
---
I called Mom's attorney.
"If I help with bail, what happens next?"
"She'll be released. She'll have to stay in the area. She'll have to wear an ankle monitor."
"And if she violates the terms?"
"She'll go back to jail."
I was quiet.
"This is a lot to process," I said.
"I understand. But your mother is in a very bad place right now."
"She put herself there."
"Yes. But that doesn't change the fact that she needs help."
"She needs to face consequences."
"That's part of it. But she also needs support."
"I don't know if I can do that."
"Think about it. Let me know by tomorrow."
---
I called Grandma.
"Mom's bail is $200,000."
"She can rot in jail."
"Grandma, that's harsh."
"She stole from me. She forged my signature. She locked me in a laundry room. She deserves to be in jail."
"Grandma, I'm not saying she doesn't. I'm just trying to figure out what's right."
"Claire, you're a good person. You're trying to see the best in her. But sometimes people don't change. Sometimes they just get better at hiding who they really are."
"Is that what you think she's doing?"
"I don't know. But I'm not taking any more chances."
