Grandma invited Mom to her birthday party.
I was nervous.
But I didn't object.

Mom showed up with a gift and an apology.
"Eleanor, I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry for hurting you. I'm sorry for stealing from you. I'm sorry for failing you as a daughter."
Grandma opened her arms.
"Come here."
They hugged.
They cried.
They started to heal.

I watched from the corner.
"I'm proud of you," I told my mother.
"Thank you, Claire."
"I'm proud of all of us."

Aunt Margaret was there too.
She watched the reunion with tears in her eyes.
"I never thought I'd see this," she said.
"Neither did I."
"Your mother has come a long way."
"She has."
"Claire, you did this. You brought us all together."
"I just did what I had to do."
"You did what was right."
