Chapter 13 - The Hospital Visit
I took Mom to see Grandma.
Grandma was sitting up in bed.
Her color was better.
Her bandage was properly wrapped.

Mom walked in first.
"Eleanor," she said.
"I'm here to apologize."
"You're here because you got caught."
"Yes. But I'm also here because I'm sorry."
Grandma looked at me.
"Claire, could you give us a minute?"
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."

I stepped out into the hallway.
I could hear them talking through the door.
I couldn't make out the words.
But I heard crying.
Lots of crying.

After about twenty minutes, the door opened.
Mom came out first.
Her eyes were red.
She looked exhausted.
"Your grandmother wants to see you."
I walked in.
Grandma was sitting up, wiping her eyes.
"Claire, come here."
I sat beside her.
"What happened?"
"We had a long talk."
"A productive one?"
"I think so."
"What did she say?"
"She apologized. She explained. She's going to get help."
"Help?"
"She's going to see a therapist. She's going to try to deal with her fear of abandonment."
"Grandma, are you sure about this?"
"I'm sure."
"Are you sure she's not just manipulating you?"
"Maybe she is. But I'm giving her a chance. That's what families do."
