Chapter 6 - The Arrest
Mom was arrested two days later.
I watched from my car as two police officers led her out of her house.
She was handcuffed.
She was wearing pajamas.
She looked old and tired.
Her eyes found me through the window.
She didn't say anything.
She didn't have to.
The look on her face told me everything.
She was blaming me for all of it.

The news spread quickly through the family.
My aunt called me from California.
"What did you do?" she demanded.
"I stopped her from stealing from Grandma."
"You destroyed our family."
"Mom destroyed the family. I just helped Grandma escape."
"She's your mother!"
"And Grandma's her mother. That didn't stop her from stealing from her."
The line went silent.
I could hear my aunt breathing.
"Claire, I don't know what to say."
"I don't need you to say anything. I need you to stand by Grandma. She's the victim here."
"Your mother has been through a lot."
"We all have. That doesn't excuse what she did."
