Chapter 9 - The Poisoned Ledger

David opened the folder, pointing his pen at a series of massive red numbers.

"Four years ago, Eleanor quietly transferred eight hundred thousand dollars out of the trust to pay off her personal gambling debts in Atlantic City," David revealed.

"She committed grand larceny against her own grandson's inheritance."

My breath caught in my throat.

"That trust was created by Arthur's late father specifically for Leo’s college education and future," I gasped.

"Precisely," David nodded, his eyes gleaming with professional malice.

"Eleanor hid the missing funds by forging Arthur’s signature on the annual audit."

"She needed Arthur to look wealthy so no one would audit the trust."

"When you paid the rent, you unknowingly kept her out of prison for four years."

"And now that you stopped paying..."

"...the trust bank is launching an official criminal audit tomorrow morning."

I sat back in the leather chair, feeling a dark, cold wave of satisfaction wash over me.
