Chapter 15 - The New Beginning

Arthur buried his face in his hands, weeping quietly as the finality of his loss settled over him.
He stood up slowly, picked up his plastic bag, and turned back toward the elevator without saying another word.
The heavy steel doors closed between us, ending twelve long years of illusion once and for all.
I turned to Leo, pulling him into a tight, warm hug.
"You did great, Leo," I whispered into his hair.
"Thanks to you, Sarah," Leo smiled, wiping a stray tear from his cheek.
"Now, can we please eat those cinnamon rolls you baked?"
I laughed out loud, the sound filling the bright, sunlit hallway.
"Yes, we can."
Six months later, Eleanor Westwood pled guilty to grand larceny and was sentenced to four years in state prison.
Arthur took a job as an entry-level logistics clerk in New Jersey, working long hours to pay off his debts and live in a modest studio apartment.
As for me, I stood on the balcony of my Brooklyn apartment, watching the sunset illuminate the Manhattan skyline in brilliant shades of gold and pink.
Beside me, Leo was laughing while showing me his acceptance letter to Columbia University's summer science program.
I didn't have the Upper East Side address anymore.
I didn't have the luxury chandelier or the high-society status.
But as I looked at the bright, fearless young man standing next to me, I knew I had something far more valuable.
I had my life back.
May you like
I had my dignity.
And above all, I had a real family.
