Chapter 6 - The Broken Key

The new apartment in Brooklyn smelled of fresh paint and pine wood.

It was smaller than the penthouse, but filled with natural sunlight.

I sat at the kitchen island, going over the enrollment paperwork for Leo’s new school.

Leo was sitting on the couch, setting up his laptop, looking more relaxed than I had seen him in years.

Suddenly, a violent knocking rattled the front door.

I stood up, signaling for Leo to stay seated.

I walked to the door and looked through the peep hole.

Arthur stood outside, his tie undone and his hair completely wild.

I unlocked the deadbolt and opened the door halfway.

"Sarah! Please!" Arthur begged, pushing his hand against the doorframe.

"You have to come back!"

"The landlord called the building marshals!"

"They locked us out three hours ago!"

"All our clothes are still inside!"

I looked at him with an icy expression.

"You had twenty-four hours to pay the deposit, Arthur."

"Where is your mother's pride now?"
