Chapter 12 - The Eviction at the Hotel

Two hours later, rain poured relentlessly over the midtown streets.
I stood under an umbrella near the entrance of the Plaza Hotel, watching Arthur and Eleanor step out onto the pavement.
Two hotel security guards were carrying four oversized suitcases out behind them.
"You can't do this!" Eleanor shrieked at the hotel manager standing near the glass doors.
"My son's credit card is valid!"
"Mrs. Westwood, your card was declined five minutes ago when the court freeze was executed," the manager said politely but firmly.
"We cannot extend your stay."
Arthur stood on the sidewalk, his expensive suit completely soaked from the downpour.
He looked like a broken man, staring at the pavement as his mother continued to scream at the staff.
Valerie walked out of the side entrance, holding her belly with one hand and pulling a pink carry-on bag with the other.
"Arthur! What is going on?!" Valerie yelled over the sound of traffic and rain.
"They just canceled our room!"
"My back hurts! Where are we supposed to sleep tonight?!"
Arthur slowly turned to look at Valerie, his eyes empty.

"I don't know, Valerie," Arthur said softly, his voice drowned out by the thunder.
"I don't have any money left."
