Chapter 13 - A Knock in the Dark

Three weeks passed in quiet peace.
The new apartment in Brooklyn had finally begun to feel like a real home.
Leo had made the varsity swim team at his new high school, and my hospital research project had just secured a two-million-dollar federal grant.
It was eleven o'clock on a Tuesday night when the building intercom buzzed softly.
I walked over to the wall monitor and pressed the speaker button.
"Yes?" I asked.
"Sarah... please," Arthur’s voice rasped through the speaker.
He sounded exhausted, broken, and completely desperate.
"It's raining outside... I just need to talk to Leo for five minutes."

Arthur was standing on the wet sidewalk under the streetlamp, wearing a stained coat, holding a small plastic grocery bag.
Leo stepped out of his bedroom, hearing the intercom.
He looked at the screen, then looked at me.
"Do you want me to turn it off, Leo?" I asked gently.
Leo shook his head slowly.
May you like
"No," Leo said quietly, walking toward the front door.
"Let's end this properly."
